So… what actually is MTHFR?

MTHFR is just a gene. Everyone has one. It gives your body instructions to make an enzyme — a tiny helper — that converts folate (from food) into a form your body can actually use.

Some people have a small spelling mistake in that gene. This means the helper works a bit slower than normal. It's very common — around half of all people have some version of this.

The enzyme's job is part of something called methylation — a process your body does millions of times a day. It affects things like energy, mood, and how your body handles certain nutrients.
